Windows are the epitome of the pairing of function and beauty. They are the transition between the outdoors and indoors, ushering light and air inside. They are a means of extending our views beyond the parameters of our walls. To spin a well-known phrase, they are our eyes to the world outside, mirrors of the soul within.
Now, more than ever, well-dressed windows are a focal point, even to the extent that they are making a central style statement. When furnishing our homes today, we recognize the impact that our windows and their views make, thoughtfully framing them as we would frame a picture. We have grown weary of hard and stark treatments, so we are moving away from using blinds and shades alone, and are using draperies and curtains more extensively to soften the window scape.
Today, window treatment approaches are as varied as are home furnishing styles, ranging from full layered treatments to simple valance or panel treatments, from light and sheer to weightly and opulent. Lifestyles and home furnishing tastes tend to determine window treatment choices, and in some cases, havge lead to the creation of new window treatment trends.

What is the difference between the curtain and the drapery? Many people use these terms interchangeably, but they are actually two very different terms. Curtains are made of lightweight fabrics and are usually unlined. They extend only the length of the window. Draperies, however, are employed on large windows – picture windows, for example. They extend to the floor, are lined with a backing, and are made from heavier fabric. There is so much of the material that they hang in folds. Curtains or draperies are more important than they might seem. They are used for privacy purposes, of course, and to block out the sunshine. Sunshine is all very well outside, but inside it is actually quite destructive. Direct sunlight causes the fabric of your furniture to fade, as well as your paintings or other wall decorations.
Interior Shutters Curtains and draperies don’t really keep out all the sunlight that they should. The solution is to install interior shutters as well. Interior shutters come in a wide variety of styles and materials, from traditional wooden louvered shutters to those made of PVC or vinyl. Whatever the decor of the interior of your room, you can find a shutter to compliment it – and one which will perform those other, vital services of providing privacy, sun protection, and even extra insulation should you live in a cold climate. When considering your home interior decorating options, don’t forget the lowly window curtain. They still offer an effortless beauty and warmth that can compliment almost any room. It’s amazing how a simple set of window curtains can add beauty to a room’s decor. It is such a simple addition and one that pays dividends for years to come. If you are considering curtains, consider purchasing drapery panels. They don’t require any complicated measuring and are easy to install.
For many people, curtains have gone the way of other outdated window treatments, like those old bamboo shades or vinyl roller shades. Maybe you have a negative association with window curtains from your great Aunt’s house. You know who I am talking about, that Aunt who had those awful polyester drapes from Montgomery Ward, or some similar store. It’s true that window curtains haven’t changed much in their basic form. They still have many of the same attributes and styles but, what’s changed is the variety of fabrics, textures and colors. So, maybe it’s time to take a fresh look.
I am a big fan of drapes because I believe they add real warmth and luxury to any room. And, they make for such a simple addition. Almost anyone can install them, something rewarding in itself. Once installed, curtains add color, texture, depth – even sound dampening to any room. Colors, patterns and fabrics can be chosen to compliment a room’s color and even other window treatments, such as blinds or shades.

The warm days of summer are now just a memory. Your need for outdoor activities have now turned into a longing to nest. The cooler weather makes it more desirable to spend time indoors.
The chill in the air also brings with it a chance to decorate your home in a way that reflects the changing season, without any major undertaking. A few minor touches can go a long way to giving your home the feel of autumn. This is a chance to use leaves, pumpkins and gourds in creative ways. Here are six simple fall home decor ideas -
1.Create a centerpiece with a single orange pumpkin with a colorful garland of dried flowers around it, or you can fill a platter, basket or tray with an assortment of gourds and dried corn or maize from Fall Harvest and Farmer’s Markets.
2.The colors of autumn can be found in the red, pink, brown, orange and yellow leaves that fall from the trees. Your market will also carry a vivid assortment of fruits and vegetables, from the reds and greens of apples to multi-colored squash.
3.Gather a variety of colorful leaves and display them in a clear glass bowl.
4.Adorn your sofa with a throw or pillows of different sizes in the deep warm colors of autumn.
5.Replace or add drapery in darker colors and weightier fabrics such as velvet or Thai silk.

Bay windows are eye-catching amenities you’ll often see on classic houses and older Victorian homes. They can look very elegant and enhance the look of your house. There are, however, specific needs which must be met in order to design beautiful window treatments that will do your bay windows justice.
There are a number of questions you need to ask yourself before starting to think about the window treatments themselves. Why was a bay window installed in this particular location? Is there a window seat, and what kind of cushions do I need for it? What will its main use be? Is it located in a child’s bedroom? Is the window mainly ornamental? By answering questions such as these, you’ll have a much better idea of the type of window treatments you’re going to want on your window.
If you have an old Victorian bay window, it may well be that it has always been dressed using the heavy drapery materials favored during that era. You might want to consider exchanging those heavy fabrics for newer, lighter ones that will provide an airier effect. These light fabrics will also soften the angles of the window. Whatever you decide, you’ll want to find fabric that matches the decor of the room. In order to create a more dramatic look, you can add faux jewels to your draperies in order to make them more noticeable.
