The remote control has become a standard element in the lives of many people around the world. Most will have a remote to their TV and stereo systems, while others may have remotes to other things such as their computer or printer. But what about having remote control blinds? That’s right… instead of having to use a cord to open, close or draw up your window covering, you can conveniently use a remote control. These are known specifically as motorized blinds, since a motor is used as part of their mechanism.
Top-Notch Technology
Now, if you think that motorized blinds must be flawed in some way, think again. The technology used is top-notch, meaning that both the remote control and the blind will last for a very long time. Style-wise, they come in the same type of varieties as their cordless or manual-cordless counterparts. You can get them in vinyl, fabric or even wood. They are also not limited in style, since vertical and horizontal blinds as well as shades all can be motorized.

A current trend in contemporary interior design is for more simple architectural window coverings. An example of this would be the use of motorized shades. In Palm Desert, Palm Springs, and Rancho Mirage, we are often building in pockets above windows with electrical outlets in today’s contemporary homes to provide for the many options in motorized window treatments. With advancing technology, anything is possible in interior design; You can have window treatments controlled by a switch on the wall, a remote control, or both. You can have the window treatments communicate with an automated system controlled by a main computer in your home. The shades can be grouped according to rooms, areas, or individually.

First, let us define why people like you buy or need blinds. Blinds are window coverings used for various practical reasons. They keep sunlight from getting in thus isolating heat, or they insulate heat keeping the room warmer during winter. They also provide partial or complete privacy while keeping the shade of the room at varying degrees according to one’s preference. With some creativity, blinds enhance the beauty and ambience of the room. There are two main classifications of blinds, the solid blinds and the slat blinds. Solid blinds which are also called shades usually have no spaces in between like the pleated blinds, although some woven-wood blinds allow light and air passage in between small spaces. When one thinks of window blinds, what commonly comes to mind are the kinds that are made up of slats which are either vertically hung on one end, or horizontally suspended on looped cords. The slats can be rotated to certain degrees to allow or block the light from coming into the room, or to block the view to and from the outside. Blinds with horizontal slats are called Venetian blinds which are further classified according to the materials used like vinyl blinds, the metal blinds, the plastic blinds and the wood or wooden blinds. They are also named according to their types like the mini blinds, the cellular blinds or shades the cordless blinds, the remote control blinds, the motorized blinds and the likes.

Talk about optimism. Executives at Lagotek, a Bellevue company developing fancy home-automation systems, are convinced they’ll sail through the housing downturn.”We’re in the perfect time in the perfect place,” said Ilya Billig, vice president of business development. It’s counterintuitive, but Billig said Lagotek is seeing more interest among builders desperately seeking ways to make their homes stand out in a buyer’s market. “Now they listen,” he said. “They say, ‘We have 100 homes sitting, not selling; what can we do — how do we differentiate ourselves from other builders?’ “ Lagotek, now approaching annual sales of $5 million, was started in 2004 by a group of former Microsoft engineers. They developed a system that wirelessly controls lights, heat, security equipment and entertainment systems, using touch-screen control panels that fit in standard double-gang electrical boxes.

A window blind is a window covering composed of long strips of fabric or rigid material. Examples of window blinds include shutters, Venetian blinds, roller shades and curtain-like track blinds. In Britain awnings are also considered blinds. A blind limits observation and thus blinds the observer to the view. The main types are slat blinds which can be opened in two ways and solid blinds. Slat blinds have long strips called slats. These can be rotated to open the blind while it is still covering the window. In track blinds the slats hang vertically from one end. In Venetian blinds and mini blinds the slats are suspended horizontally on cords. A slat blind can also be opened so it is no longer covering the window.

Jeez, we use a lot of energy we’re not even aware of. Here’s a design concept by Shane Ellis and Terry Brown that’ll lay on the guilt, glowing red when those wall warts are sucking power. The more energy used, the brighter red the outlet glows. Bugged by all that Technicolor nagging? Just turn off the LED and that outlet transforms back into one that looks like all the others. Nice design. Now if they could just make it even more colorful, perhaps glowing green to reward us when we’re saving energy. And while you’re at it Shane and Terry, hide those screws on the top and bottom the way Lutron does (pictured at right), and you’ll have a high-end and somewhat entertaining green gadget.
