Picking the Right Color for Custom Window Treatments
The visual effects of color used in a window treatment will vary according to many factors:
1. A brightly colored window treatment against a light background advances and fills the space. The same treatment against a dark background will not look as large or bright.
2. To draw attention to a window treatment, use a bright color against a lighter value of its complement. To minimize the treatment, surround it with colors of the same value.
3. Medium-value prints against a white background are easy to see at a distance; in neutrals, the same pattern is less eye-catching.
4. The surface of a fabric affects its color intensity. A slick, shiny fabric such as satin or chintz will look more intensely red than the identical red on homespun linen.
5. Subtle color contrasts make a room feel formal, calm, feminine. Bold color contrasts make a room feel informal, cozy, masculine.
6. Color affects the appearance of lines. Horizontal lines in any color widen a window treatment, vertical colored lines against a contrasting ground add height.
7. Warm colors visually advance, cool colors recede.
8. Balance colors throughout the room. One hue should cover as much as two-thirds of an area, with a second color covering nearly a third. Repeating colors around a room or using a progression of values of one color – light green for walls, darker greens for draperies, furniture, and carpet- creates visual rhythm.
